A Time of Crisis
The funding of public education in
Massachusetts is in crisis.
Indeed, if we truly believe in the words above spoken by President
Kennedy over forty-five years ago, than we must conclude that our
progress as a community and as a nation is in jeopardy. For
despite our best efforts, we are failing our children.
In the process as well, communities are being pitted against each
other in a fevered competition for limited funds. Something
has got to change.

|
Many
complex factors have contributed to the current crisis:
unfunded state and federal mandates; the rising cost of
energy and health care; conflicting community
relationships; limited public and private funding;
outdated and static curriculum; and deteriorating
buildings and infrastructure. |

In recent
decades, educators and administrators have been forced to make
choices (i.e. staff and curriculum cuts) that often undermine
student learning to balance their budgets. Communities have
often had to decide between schools and town services. |

It is time to
redefine how we fund education and spend the money we have to
optimize for positive student outcomes. We need to create the
partnerships, align the stakeholders and find the solutions
that can work for all of us.
Solving the
problem of how to best fund our public schools must become a
state and national priority. For that to happen, we need
to take local action now. That is why a number of North Shore
communities have recently formed the North Shore Coalition for
School Funding. We hope you will consider joining us --
for the sake of our nation, our state, and, most importantly,
for our children. |
